Express Yachts
Express styles are typically fast planing yachts without a flybridge, (one deck) and a large cockpit (or seating area – ½ of the deck space) with some of it exposed to the sun and the remaining under cover. Beneath is the engine room and possibly crew. The accommodations are forward and down - a common design having the salon in the middle with either a stateroom aft and two forward; or all forward (1-3 depending on size). Because these boats lack a high center of gravity, they tend not to roll much, however because of interior volume, are mostly considered day or weekend boats. An innovative piece of equipment used for holding the tender (whether it be a jet ski or RIB - rigid inflatable boat) is a tender lift, which hydraulically raises and lowers the tender as well as allowing for a nice submersible area to relax (easy for guests and pets to get in and out of the water). Some express models offer a “garage” with a hinging transom for storing the tender within the yacht. Almost all express style boats are Deep-V, planing hulls constructed of FRP sandwich for light and strong qualities and are equipped with larger engines designed for speed. Most are fine for coastwise light sea condition cruising, but with limited range and ocean-keeping characteristics.
Popular engine configurations for express cruisers are typically v-drives, which allow the engine to be placed with the gears facing the bow and with the shafting reversed via a transfer box. This allows for the engines to be placed further aft (to allow for more interior space) and a lesser shaft angle. Big horsepower is usually the norm, so that these boats can go as fast as possible. Popular engines include Caterpillar, Cummins, MAN, Yanmar, MTU and older Detroit Diesels. Because of the large engines and demand for space forward, these engine rooms are often quite tight.
Express Boat manufacturers include:
European builders include Sunseeker (England), Mangusta (France), Pershing, Baglietto, Atlantis, Azimut, (Italy). All are made of FRP and typically include a crew cabin aft. Sea Ray, Tiara and Cruisers design express yachts which are North American made.
Downeast style express yachts, reminiscent of by-gone luxury dayboats , have gained popularity recently
among US boaters. Builders include Hinckley of New England , Eastbay (Grand Banks in Malaysia), Vicem
and Soluna from Turkey, Hinckley and San Juan.
